Choose your dates and bikes above and pay securely. You receive a confirmation by email right away. Book early for family bikes in peak season (April–October).
Bring a valid ID (passport or ID card) – no deposit. We adjust the bikes to your height and explain everything before you leave.
Return by the end time of your booking. Returning outside opening hours is possible – we explain how when you pick up your bike.

📍 Parking on Google MapsThe most popular bike ride from Bruges: about 7 km each way along the Damse Vaart canal, a quiet, flat road lined with tall poplars. Roughly 30 minutes by bike – perfect for families. In Damme: a charming village with a medieval town hall, cafés and bookshops.
🚲 Route to Damme on Google MapsFrom Damme you can continue along the canals towards the coast. For a full day out we recommend an e-bike or electric longtail – especially with children on board or against the sea wind.
- Helmets: not mandatory for adults in Belgium. At Bike Family, children under 12 must wear a helmet when riding or being carried on our bikes – kids helmets are free.
- Always lock your bike to a fixed object (bike rack, railing).
- Many one-way streets in Bruges are open to cyclists in both directions – look for the sign "uitgezonderd fietsers".
- Watch out for horse carriages and pedestrians in the busy centre around the Markt and Burg.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What if I have just one child (up to 22 kg)?
For one child weighing up to 22 kg, you can simply add a child seat to a regular city bike (+€3/day). This is often easier and more practical than a longtail or cargo bike for single child trips.
Do you have bikes for older kids?
Yes! Our 24-inch kids mountain bike fits children of approx. 125–150 cm (around 8–12 years) and costs the same as a city bike. Kids helmets are free.
Can longtail bikes carry 3 children?
Yes! Our longtail bikes are designed to safely carry up to 3 children on the extended rear rack (combined weight up to 150 kg). Perfect for families with multiple kids aged 4+.
What's the difference between a longtail and cargo bike?
Longtail: Children sit behind you on an extended rear rack. Cargo bike (Muli): Younger children (3-5 years) or dogs sit in a box in front where you can see them.
Do I need electric or regular longtail?
Regular longtail: If you're an experienced cyclist and planning only city rides around Bruges, the standard longtail will work fine.
Electric longtail (recommended): For a full day of cycling or longer trips (e.g. to Bruges countryside or to the coast), we strongly recommend the electric version – it makes riding with passengers effortless!
Are helmets included?
Helmets are not mandatory for adults in Belgium. At Bike Family, children under 12 must wear a helmet when riding or being carried on our bikes. Kids helmets are free – just add them to your online booking so we have the right size ready. Adult helmets can be provided on request.
Can an adult sit on the back of a longtail?
Yes! Longtails can carry one adult passenger (or two teenagers) comfortably on the rear rack. Great for couples or friends exploring together. We recommend the electric version for easy riding.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes! Our Muli cargo bike is perfect for dogs. Your furry friend rides safely in the front cargo box (max 60 kg). Many customers love exploring Bruges with their dogs this way!
Is the Muli cargo bike easy to handle?
The Muli has slightly different handling compared to regular bikes (like any cargo bike). If you're a confident, experienced cyclist, you'll adapt quickly. If you have limited cycling experience, we recommend sticking to regular bikes or longtails to avoid accidents – safety first!
Do I need to book in advance?
We have a limited fleet, and demand is high from April to September. We strongly recommend booking online in advance, especially for family bikes (longtails and cargo bikes). Walk-ins are welcome but availability is not guaranteed during peak season.
How do I pay?
You pay the full rental online when booking: Bancontact, credit/debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or iDEAL. Walk-in customers pay in the shop.
Is there a deposit?
No deposit – just bring a valid ID (passport or ID card). Optional Damage protection (€3–5/day) covers accidental damage during your ride.
Can I cancel or change my booking?
More than 7 days before pick-up: full refund. Between 7 days and 48 hours: 50% refund. Less than 48 hours or no-show: no refund. Bad weather? We move your booking to another date free of charge (subject to availability).
Can I take the bikes outside Bruges?
Yes! You're welcome to explore the Bruges countryside, nearby villages, or even ride to the coast. Perfect for day trips!
Where do I pick up and return the bikes?
At our shop: Predikherenrei 1c, Bruges. We do not offer delivery or collection services for rentals.
Where can I park my car?

What if I return after closing time?
No problem – returning outside opening hours is possible. We explain how when you pick up your bike. Please return by the end time of your booking – late returns cost €5 (city/kids) or €10 (e-bike, longtail, cargo) per started hour.
Can I pick up on Sunday or Monday?
Only with an online booking. The shop is closed on Sunday and Monday, but we come in between 10:00 and 12:00 for customers who booked online at least one day in advance. Without an online booking nobody will be at the shop – walk-ins are not possible on these days.
